Royal British Legion Benefits & Money Advice

A partnership between major charities (The Royal British Legion, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAFBF), Citizens Advice and Citizens Advice Northern Ireland) was launched to provide a Benefits and Money Advice Service in December 2007 and has since grown significantly to meet demand.

There are currently 46 Benefits and Money Advisers located in bureaux across England. North East Derbyshire CAB's RBL team covers the whole of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire with two full time Royal British Legion Benefits & Money Advice Caseworkers and an Administration Support Worker.

Benefits and Money Advisers provide advice on debt issues and benefits queries. They carry out an initial in-depth interview with the client in order to understand the full extent of the issue at hand, and then explore options with the client in order to find a suitable way to resolve the situation. This includes seeking to maximise the client’s income and providing thorough assistance which can include negotiations with creditors, responding to court action, applying for legal remedies and making benefits claims.

This project is unique in that its Advisers are experienced with the situations that can arise for individuals and families with military connections. These include specific areas of concern, like War Pensions or the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, and more generalist benefits, which all too often people don’t know they can claim.

In 2010 The Royal British Legion won the IMA (Institute of Money Advisers) best partnership award for recognition of its highly successful Benefits & Money Advice Service.
