Problems With Services: Alternative dispute resolution schemes and trade association codes of practice

Some trade association codes of practice say that traders who are members must offer to resolve the customer's consumer problem in designated ways. This may include, if a problem is found, for example, exchanging the goods, repairing them or agreeing to put a service right. Codes of practice do not give you any legal rights, but you may find it easier to negotiate using the code of practice. If the trader refuses to follow the code, you can complain to the trade association.

Many trade associations are a part of an alternative dispute resolution scheme. Alternative dispute resolution can be used to resolve your consumer problem without going to court and may be used in preference to court action.

Check to see if the trader is a member of a trade association and whether the trade association has a code of practice. If you cannot find a trade association speak to trading standards and ask if there is any scheme that can help you.
