Car Crime

Car Crime
Imagine how you would feel if someone stole your family car. Imagine if you had to be somewhere very important and you couldn't make it because the car had been stolen. People need their cars for lots of reasons, including medical reasons.

Imagine the chaos caused if someone steals it. Nobody in their right mind would leave a pearl necklace or their wallet out in the open, but car owners have no choice but to leave one of their most valuable possessions by the roadside. Very few people would actually consider stealing somebody else's money or jewellery, but cars are, for some reason, not classed with other valuables.

If car thieves realised that they were stealing an average of £5,000 from the car owner, do you think they would still consider car theft a petty crime?

It isn't only the insurance companies that pay the cost of car theft, we all do. Joyriding is stupid, inconsiderate and very dangerous. After their home, cars are usually a person's most valuable possession.

Although you may not be directly involved in car crime yourself, you might know someone who is. Take time to talk to them and explain their problem. Explain what might happen to them if they continue stealing cars and show them newspaper articles about the effects of car crime.

Every year, hundreds of people are killed or injured through car crime. The victims could easily be one of your family or friends. By turning a blind eye to car crime, you become partly responsible for the consequences.
