Renting From The Council Or A Housing Association

This is usually cheaper and more secure than renting privately. Accommodation is usually self contained and unfurnished. There is a waiting list, and how long you wait will depend on your circumstances. It's a good idea to put your name down on the list (register) in any case, unless you're sure you don't want this type of accommodation.

The Council and certain Housing Associations keep a joint Housing Register, and there is one form to fill in for both. Ask at your local councils housing office. You can be on the Council register from 16, but you may have to be 18 to go on the Housing Association Register (but ask).

While you are waiting to hear from them:

  • Fill in a change of address form if you move
  • Let them know if your circumstances change (or those of the people you live with) e.g.
    • you are being harassed where you live
    • you are being asked to leave by the people you live with
    • the place you live is making you ill, mentally or physically - eg damp, dust (can worsen asthma), overcrowding
    • you become pregnant
    • medical conditions or special circumstances affecting you
